Poets Jim Moore and Jane Hilberry in Conversation!
Old Firehouse Books is thrilled to welcome poet Jim Moore to our virtual event space! We'll be celebrating the launch of his latest poetry collection, Prognosis, on Wednesday, November 10th at 6pmMT. He will be joined in conversation by poet Jane Hilberry, author of Still the Animals Enter! The event will be streaming to the Old Firehouse Books Facebook page, and is free.
In his eighth collection, the celebrated poet Jim Moore looks into unrelenting darkness where moments of tenderness and awe illuminate, at times suddenly like lightning in the night, at others, more quietly, as the steady glow of streetlights in a snowstorm. These are poems of both patience and urgency, of necessary attendance and helpless exuberance in the breathing world—something rare in contemporary poetry. Written in Minneapolis amid the COVID-19 pandemic’s masked and distanced loneliness, after the police murder of George Floyd, as an empire comes to an end, Prognosis turns toward the living moment as a surprising source of abundance.
Exuberant dogs, deer splintering a fence, bears that slip in through the door of dreams: in Hilberry's poems, the animals surely enter, and it is this book’s dream-found responsibility to see further, or rather, see better, to leave the door open to strange visits and visitations, in daylight, in the looked-over corners of our daily lives. In these expertly crafted poems, Hilberry does not shy away from the difficult--she looks into loneliness, a friend's suicide, the death of a parent. But the alchemy of poetry is that it transforms darkness into song. As experience arises in all its wild and ungovernable forms, the book ultimately offers an invitation: "You could be part of this."
Books can be shipped anywhere within the United States (unfortunately, we cannot ship internationally).
