Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress who practices magic in secret, terrified of the day she will be locked into a marital collar that will cut off her powers to protect her unborn children. In a stroke of luck, Beatrice finds a grimoire that contains the key to becoming a Magus, but before she can purchase it, a rival sorceress swindles the book right out of her hands.

CL Polk's historical-ish fantasy books never cease to delight me--and THE MIDNIGHT BARGAIN is no exception. The echoes of our own world's history ripple across a new society and a new story full of romance, friendship, and magic. Fierce, independent women--and the lengths they'll go to to preserve that independence--take center stage in a tale with all the wit and charm of an Austen novel. Beatrice and Ysbeta, on their quest to preserve their magic and follow their hearts, are incredible to watch blossom from timid beginnings to ferocious friendship with a drive so compelling I could not put the book down.
