Bill O'Neill: Virtual Book Talk and In Person Signing!
Mayor Jeni James Arndt and Old Firehouse Books are thrilled to welcome author, poet, and New Mexican state senator Bill O'Neill to our virtual and in person event spaces! We'll be celebrating his new novel, Short Session, and his latest poetry collection, The Definition of Empty, on Wednesday, August 18th at 6pm MT. The event will be streaming to the Old Firehouse Books Facebook page, and is free. Then, the following day, Thursday, August 19th, Bill will be signing copies of the books in person, from 11:30am to 1:30pm just outside the store.
Weather permitting, this event will be taking place out front of our store, and we encourage you to wear a mask and remain 6-feet apart when in line. Readers will have the chance to say hi to this amazing author and have their books signed. Books can be purchased in advance of the event, or on the day of, but we do ask that you purchase your books inside the store before joining the signing line outside of it. (Weather not permitting, the event will be rescheduled to a later date.)
About Short Session: fast-paced, wisecracking look at life as a fundraiser and would-be senator. From his insider's perch, O'Neill charts the highs and lows and the compromises involved on the campaign trail, from mudslinging mailshots to photo-shopped teeth. The voice is sharp and self-aware, and the dialogue crackles like kindling. A terrific read.--JJ Amaworo Wilson
About The Definition of Empty: the story of a dedicated advocate trying to help adolescents facing incarceration and newly released parolees navigate imperfect and seemingly indifferent legal systems and societies. Told from the point of view of a public servant trying his best to work with people at various levels of brokenness, these poems are compassionate, heartbreaking, and even sometimes brutal while the voice is gentle, outraged, and na ve in turns. With this collection O'Neill insists that readers bear witness to the struggles of disenfranchised people they might otherwise ignore.
Books can be shipped anywhere within the United States (unfortunately, we cannot ship internationally).
