The 2011 selection is March by Geraldine Brooks.
Fort Collins Reads has selected the Pulitzer Prize-winning book March by Geraldine Brooks for its 2011 community-wide reading program. Brooks will speak Nov. 12 at The Hilton in Fort Collins. Tickets go on sale in September.
March is an historical fiction novel based on the Civil War experiences of the father characterized in the classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Brooks won the Pulitzer for her book in 2006. Her appearance in Fort Collins will be in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, and in recognition of the Louisa May Alcott award.
The 2011 event will be the ninth hosted by Fort Collins Reads. Past selections have included The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle; When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka; Holes by Louis Sachar, and, last year, The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
Brooks is a native of Australia who lives in Massachusetts. She worked for 11 years as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, covering the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans. Her latest book, Caleb’s Crossing, went on sale May 3 and tells about the young man who became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard. Brooks also wrote People of the Book and Year of Wonders, both New York Times best-selling novels. Her nonfiction books are Foreign Correspondence: A Pen Pal’s Journey From Down Under to All Over and Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women.
