DESCRIPTION:
Join us this month as we solve Barbara Hambly’s mystery\, A Free Man of Color.

&nbsp\;

It is 1833. In the midst of Mardi Gras\, Benjamin January\, a Creole physician and music teacher\, is playing piano at the Salle d'Orleans when the evenings festivities are interrupted--by murder. Ravishing Angelique Crozat\, a notorious octoroon who travels in the city's finest company\, has been strangled to death. With the authorities reluctant to become involved\, Ben begins his own inquiry\, which will take him through the seamy haunts of riverboatmen and into the huts of voodoo-worshipping slaves. But soon the eyes of suspicion turn toward Ben—for\, black as the slave who fathered him\, this free man of color is still the perfect scapegoat....

DESCRIPTION:
Join us for a discussion of Gail Collins’ book\, When Everything Changed.

&nbsp\;

A comprehensive mix of oral history and Gail Collins's keen research--covering politics\, fashion\, popular culture\, economics\, sex\, families\, and work--When Everything Changed is the definitive book on five crucial decades of progress. The enormous strides made since 1960 include the advent of the birth control pill\, the end of &quot\;Help Wanted--Male&quot\; and &quot\;Help Wanted--Female&quot\; ads\, and the lifting of quotas for women in admission to medical and law schools. Gail Collins describes what has happened in every realm of women's lives\, partly through the testimonies of both those who made history and those who simply made their way.

&nbsp\;

But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction\, sending them to the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet\, a beautiful\, brainy teenage girl who has decided to fight the feed and its omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires.

SUMMARY:Graphically Yours\, Graphic Novel Book Club
DESCRIPTION:
Join us to discuss Charles Burns' graphic novel\, Black Hole.

<p class=\\"MsoNormal\\">
The setting\: suburban Seattle\, the mid-1970s. We learn from the outset that a strange plague has descended upon the area’s teenagers\, transmitted by sexual contact. The disease is manifested in any number of ways — from the hideously grotesque to the subtle (and concealable) — but once you’ve got it\, that’s it. There’s no turning back.

As we inhabit the heads of several key characters — some kids who have it\, some who don’t\, some who are about to get it — what unfolds isn’t the expected battle to fight the plague\, or bring heightened awareness to it\, or even to treat it. What we become witness to instead is a fascinating and eerie portrait of the nature of high school alienation itself — the savagery\, the cruelty\, the relentless anxiety and ennui\, the longing for escape. And then the murders start.
