Take a trip back to Chaucer’s England with this month’s selection, Mistress of the Art of Death. In this novel, a female forensic anatomist from Italy is sent to England to solve a series of child murders. Along with the mystery, there is an examination of the struggle of church versus state in medieval England, science versus superstition, and romance versus realism. Believable, human characters bring the Middle Ages to life.

Join us as we discuss Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2005 book, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Foer, who garnered attention with his novel Everything is Illuminated, once more takes a dark subject and works in offbeat humor. On the surface this is a story of a peculiar hero, nine-year-old Oskar Schell, as he goes on a quest through New York for the lock that fits with the key his father left behind after his untimely death in the September 11th attacks. On a deeper level it is a story of truth and love.
Join us as we explore Kage Baker’s debut novel, In the Garden of Iden. Part time travel epic, part social commentary, this book explores themes of hypocrisy, xenophobia, and of course, love. When wise-cracking heroine Mendoza time travels from the 24th century back to 1553 on a company mission to collect endangered botanical samples she has no interest in the people of the past. But it isn’t long before she becomes torn between doing her job and following her heart.
Colorado Book Award winners Karla Oceanak and Kendra Spanjer will be at the store with activities and readings from their hit kids’ series. Their new book, Bogus, features Aldo Zelnick and friends as they go on a treasure hunt for a mysterious ring. This event should be wonderful fun for kids and parents alike.
Join us to discuss Alan Bradley’s best-selling mystery, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. His precocious protagonist, Flavia de Luce, is a twelve-year-old expert on poison, chemistry, and lock-picking. When a dead man turns up in the cucumber bed, naturally she feels that she will be the one to solve the mystery. Alan Bradley’s smart little mystery won the Agatha and was nominated for the Anthony and Macavity awards. As a special treat, we also have the opportunity for a live phone chat with Alan Bradley at 11 a.m. on August 21! Don’t miss this rare chance for a live talk with this award-winning author.
